What inflammation actually is — explained in plain English
Think of inflammation as your body’s built-in emergency response team. The moment you get a cut, catch a virus, or injure a muscle, your immune system floods the area with white blood cells, proteins, and chemical signals to fight the threat, clean up the damage, and begin repairs. This is inflammation doing exactly what it should do. It’s protective, necessary, and in its normal form absolutely vital to your survival.
The problem starts when this emergency response doesn’t turn off. Inflammation is how your immune system responds to injury, infection, or irritants, and it can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). Chronic inflammation can last months or years and is linked to conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune diseases.
In chronic inflammation, the immune system stays in a constant low-level state of alert producing inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, interleukins, and C-reactive protein (CRP) even when there’s no active threat to fight. Over time, these chemicals begin damaging the body’s own healthy tissues, blood vessels, and organs rather than protecting them.
