Our body uses glucosamine to build and maintain the molecules that make cartilage strong and able to absorb shocks. When we get older our body does not make as much glucosamine as it used to. That is when taking glucosamine as a supplement can help. It gives our body a lot of glucosamine to work with so our body can keep building and maintaining cartilage, which is what glucosamine is used for.
The sulfate form of glucosamine is always found to be more effective for the body. It works better than the hydrochloride form of glucosamine in studies that compare them. The sulfate form of glucosamine is the one that is used often in medical studies that have good results and it is the form that the European Food Safety Authority recognizes for helping to keep cartilage healthy.

Collagen
Collagen is the abundant protein in our body. It forms the structure of cartilage, tendons, ligaments and synovial membranes. As we age our body produces collagen. After we turn 30 our natural collagen production goes down by 1% every year. We can get collagen peptides, which are broken down into smaller pieces. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM or methylsulfonylmethane is a compound that has sulfur in it. You can find MSM in amounts in fruits and vegetables. It’s also in tissues. MSM works in a way compared to glucosamine and collagen. Of helping to build cartilage MSM mainly helps to reduce inflammation and fight off damage caused by free radicals. The sulfur from MSM helps make collagen and connective tissue. The caveat: some large-scale studies (like the NIH-funded GAIT trial) found glucosamine worked better than placebo in a subgroup with moderate-to-severe pain but not in the overall cohort – underscoring that it works for some people and conditions but not universally.

Collagen peptides
The evidence has improved significantly in 2025.
