The #1 label trap: Why “1000mg fish oil” is the wrong number
This is the important thing in this entire guide and understanding it right away puts you ahead of the vast majority of people who buy supplements. When a fish oil product says “1000mg” on the front of the bottle that number refers to the weight of the oil in each capsule. Not the amount of omega-3 fatty acids.
Standard -concentrated fish oil is roughly 30% EPA and DHA, by weight. The other 70% is fatty acids. Mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats that are not the compounds that provide the health benefits shown in studies. So a “1000mg fish oil” capsule usually has about 300mg of real EPA and DHA together. To get the 1,000mg combined EPA+DHA that general health guidelines talk about you would need to take around three of these standard capsules each day.

The four molecular forms: This is the single biggest quality difference
Not all omega-3 molecules are the same. The kind of omega-3 that is in fish oil and how well your body can use it are very different. The type of omega-3 that a product has will determine how much of the stuff like EPA and DHA your body can actually use. There was a study done in 2010 by Dyerberg and others that compared how well the body absorbs types of omega-3.

Heart Health & Triglyceride Reduction
The most clinically established benefit — but with important nuances from recent trials
Omega-3 is really good for heart health and triglycerides. It has been studied for a long time. The REDUCE-IT trial had over 8,000 patients with risk of heart problems and high blood triglycerides. 67-trial meta-analysis confirms EPA-dominant formulas significantly reduce depressive symptoms
The evidence for omega-3 and mental health is really strong now.
