For a time scientists have found that eating a lot of foods that help reduce inflammation. Like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil and fatty fish. The way it works is that the good things in these foods do things at the same time. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish help get rid of the stuff that causes inflammation in our cells. The good stuff in berries and vegetables called polyphenols stops the thing that makes inflammation happen. Olive oil has something in it that works like a medicine to reduce inflammation. The fiber in the food we eat helps the good bacteria in our tummies make things that reduce inflammation in our body.

The food we eat every day is the thing that tells our body whether to be inflamed or not. A professor at Harvard, Edward Giovannucci, who teaches nutrition and epidemiology at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health says we should watch our waist size. He says women should try to be 30 inches or less around the waist and men should try to be 35 inches or less. This is because the fat, around our waist is itself a source of things that cause inflammation.

What we eat is really important because it can either cause inflammation or help reduce it. The Mediterranean diet and other foods that help reduce inflammation, like fruits and vegetables and fatty fish are all choices.

Three immediate food changes with the biggest impact

  • I like to eat fatty fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. I try to have them least twice a week. This helps replace something called acid with EPA and DHA in the membranes of my cells.. It happens pretty fast within a few weeks.
  • I also try to avoid carbohydrates. You know, things, like bread, white rice and pastries. They can make my blood glucose levels go up high and that makes my body release cytokines right away.
  • When I cook I use virgin olive oil instead of seed oils. I like it because it has something called oleocanthal which’s a natural way to block COX-2 at the molecular level.

Exercise is a way to reduce inflammation. It does this in ways at the same time. Exercise can help reduce the fat around our organs, which can produce chemicals that cause inflammation. It can also help our bodies use insulin better lower our stress levels when we do it at a pace and make our muscles produce special chemicals called myokines. These myokines, like interleukin-10 and irisin come from our muscle fibers when we exercise. They tell our system to calm down and not be so inflamed.

It is also important to remember that if we exercise intensely for too long without resting it can actually make inflammation worse for a little while. The best kind of exercise for reducing inflammation is intensity exercise. This means doing things like going for a walk riding a bike, swimming or going for a light jog. We should be able to hold a conversation while we are doing these things. What is most important for reducing inflammation is being consistent, with our exercise routine not trying to do the intense workout.

The minimum effective dose — start here

  • A 20–30 minute brisk walk daily is the single highest-impact, lowest-barrier anti-inflammatory intervention available — free, requires nothing, and produces measurable TNF reduction within the same session
  • Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week — 5 × 30 minutes, or 3 × 50 minutes
  • Reduce continuous sitting — even standing for 2 minutes every 30 minutes reduces post-meal blood glucose spikes that trigger inflammation

Strategy #3: Fix your Sleep Before anything Else

Short or poor-quality sleep increases markers on its own without considering diet, exercise or stress. This is the ignored cause of chronic inflammation in people who otherwise take care of their health. You can follow a Mediterranean diet work out five days a week and practice meditation every day. And still have high CRP if you regularly get less than seven hours of sleep. Sleep is the time when the body removes substances fixes the cortisol cycle helps the gut barrier heal and lets the immune system reset after the days activity.

The issue comes when stress lasts for a time and throws the system out of balance. When cortisol stays high for weeks and months the immune system stops responding to its signal. When theres a lot of cortisol the immune cells start making more inflammation. This is why people who are stressed and have cortisol often still have high levels of inflammation.

A 2025 study in Physiology explains how continuous stress can lead to low-level inflammation and many studies now show that mind-body practices, like mindfulness meditation, breathwork, yoga and cognitive behavioural therapy can reduce inflammation. In 2025 a study published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity showed that people with a lot of social connections tend to have lower inflammation and age more slowly. The study found that social connections really change how our brain reacts to stress. When we have social connections our brain feels less threatened, which means it does not get as stressed out. This lowers the amount of hormones in our body, which in turn reduces inflammation.

The same study in 2025 also found something. People who use media too much tend to have higher levels of inflammation. One reason for this might be that social media takes away time we could be spending on things like exercise and hanging out with friends. Another reason could be that using media late at night can disrupt our sleep, which can also cause inflammation. Social media use and social connections are two things and the study found that social connections are good, for us while too much social media use is not.
